Cyberscams including Crypto-Locker Data Loss.

BBC News – The 12 cyber-scams of Christmas.

At least a couple of these can lead to data loss. In particular, we have a number of customers each month getting in touch about the previously discussed ‘Crypto-locker’ type malware.

Quite frankly most of these scams aren’t just for Christmas, but for the whole year! Keep an eye out. As a general rule of thumb this basic advice should always apply:

  • Don’t open up attachments in emails from unknown senders.
  • Don’t click on links in emails that appear to be from your bank/credit card company.
  • Don’t download pirated software (it is likely to contain malware).
  • Don’t allow unknown persons to remotely connect to your computer.

As for other ‘data recovery’ related scams; the advice is often common sense. Do your research on an organisation and its practices. Google is a great resource and it’s likely that other people will have written about their experiences or will have the same concerns as yourself. Moreover, it is always worth looking past the first page of Google results – that’s often where the interesting search results are.
