Digital Linear Tape (DLT) (previously called CompacTape) is magnetic tape storage device first developed in 1984. During 1994 the technology was purchased by Quantum Corporation who currently manufactures drives and licenses the technology and trademark. Most magnetic tape drives use the higher capacity variant called Super Digital Linear Tape (SDLT). Although in recent years hard disk drives have been increasingly used as a backup method, the reliability of DLT & SDLT has secured its position as a backup media in the server environment. One of the traditional limitations of using tape media was the poor range of software used to create and restore the backup media. NTBackup was provided in various Windows operating systems. Although effective, it did not provide additional features, such as password protection or encryption, which has become to be an expectation in the IT industry. Norton Backup Exec extended this feature set by providing new software. However, in doing so Norton deemed it necessary to provide proprietary hardware drivers, and create proprietary backup BKF files. As a consequence Cheadle Data Recovery has dealt with a number of customers who have had difficulty accessing data on DLT media due to the complexities, or errors, associated with Norton Backup Exec. Cheadle Data Recovery has had success in recovering data from such devices. Please contact us if you are having difficulties in restoring data from a DLT or SDLT media.
As an end user the thought of serious damage to your hard drive can be daunting and in some cases frightening. The loss of data can mean vital work is lost and your computer may be damaged without you even knowing it. You should not attempt data recovery for yourself. To do can lead to irreversible damage and complete data loss.
